Hello, I’m Solanie Lottering, a qualified Somatologist and Organic Formulator with more than 20 years of experience in professional skin and body care. During this time, I’ve had the privilege of working with numerous clients, helping them better understand and care for their skin.

Many of my clients had invested considerable time and money into professional treatments and skincare. Some were fortunate enough to find products that worked well for their skin, but for many others, finding the right solution remained a real challenge.

I saw clients with highly sensitive, reactive or easily irritated skin who, despite investing in professional treatments and expensive product ranges, were still struggling to find skincare that their skin could comfortably tolerate while genuinely addressing their concerns. And even when treatments and products did deliver good results, the ongoing cost of maintaining them could become unsustainable over time.

I didn’t want healthy, well-cared-for skin to feel out of reach for them. I genuinely wanted to be part of the solution, to find better answers for their individual skin concerns and create skincare that was effective, gentle and accessible.

And so, The Hummingbird began quite simply: with a few trusted friends who were willing to venture onto a new journey with me in search of something more.

With this philosophy at its heart, every The Hummingbird product is formulated with purpose. I meticulously select high-quality natural and/or organic raw ingredients and use them at optimal concentrations, chosen for their individual purpose, properties and performance. We are passionate about keeping our formulations as close to nature as possible.

Every ingredient has a purpose. Every formulation has a reason.

For us, good formulation isn’t about adding as many ingredients as possible to a product, but rather combining botanicals that complement and support one another, creating a natural synergy that allows the formulation to work as a whole, without the need for unnecessary synthetic fillers.

Over the years, through extensive formulation, experimentation and working closely with real people and real skin, We have developed a deep appreciation for the way well-chosen botanical and naturally derived ingredients can work together as part of a considered skincare routine.

The Hummingbird is a small, family-run business, and that is something we are incredibly proud of. I formulate every product myself, while JJ, takes care of packaging, logistics and the many behind-the-scenes details that keep everything moving. Our daughters are part of the journey too. Bella, our eldest, provides technical support, while Hannah helps with bottling and labelling. There is no big production line and no faceless team.

Every product passes through our hands and every customer matters to us.

You’ll find us at the Hermanus Country Market on Saturdays, where we get to meet our customers, talk skincare and, most importantly, hear the stories behind the people who choose to use our products.
